Construction, refurbishment and maintenance services provider, J Tomlinson, has been named as a finalist in the Construction News Awards 2020.
The Nottingham-based operator is shortlisted in the Contractor of the Year (turnover under £500m) category, which recognises the most outstanding main contractor with a UK turnover of under £500m, in the calendar year 2019.
The company experienced a range of significant highs in 2019 in terms of growth, partnership milestones and the wellbeing of its workforce.
These included the opening of two new regional centres – in the North West and the North East – and key contract wins across a wide range of sectors including the development of £5.2m worth of industrial units at Airfield Business Park in Market Harborough, a £7m redevelopment of Whittington Heath Golf Club, and £4.5m worth of student accommodation refurbishment works at the University of Warwick. Last year the company was also awarded a place on Fusion21’s Construction Works and Improvements framework.
In addition, J Tomlinson enjoyed ongoing partnerships with long-standing clients such as St Modwen, delivering its seventh design and build scheme for the company, Hamberley Development, for whom J Tomlinson completed a fourth new-build, luxury care home scheme delivered in partnership following 100% on time/budget delivery of previous schemes, and the University of Warwick, which has appointed J Tomlinson on multiple refurbishment schemes since 2018.
The company also introduced Mental Health First Aid – which can be accessed by sub-contractors as well as staff – and an Employee Assistance Programme, which is open to employees and their families. Early indications are that these have been a great success, with internal reports illustrating that mental health-related absences reduced from 16% during Q1 of the company’s financial year (April – July 2019) to 8% during Q2 (July – October 2019).
J Tomlinson chief executive Mark Davis said: “The judges in the Construction News Awards are looking for evidence of contribution to brilliant projects, innovation, quality of work and a forward-looking approach to the industry, so we are thrilled that J Tomlinson has been recognised and chosen as a finalist in these construction sector awards.
“As a company, J Tomlinson prides itself on working in partnership with its clients and is committed to the wellbeing of our employees. This shortlisting is a ringing endorsement of our approach and is a reflection of the people-focused teams that we have at the company.”
The awards, run by Construction News, are scheduled to be presented at a ceremony on 9th July at Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
