The Mayor of Swansea has helped Storage Giant unveil its Phase Three expansion, adding 10,500 sq ft to its Swansea site in order to meet increasing demand, largely from the city’s growing student population.
The private self-storage company, which started life as a single unit concern in Newport at the onset of the recession, is now a multi-million turnover business, with nine operational facilities and a further seven sites in its active pipeline, with more to follow later in 2020.
Owner and MD, Simon Williams said: “I’m pleased to see this third expansion of our busy Swansea site in the Enterprise Zone, and I am grateful to the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Peter Black, for helping us cut the ribbon this state-of-the-art expansion. We are keen to invest further in Swansea – it is a city that is very much on the up, thanks to its ongoing City Deal regeneration. So, we are also actively looking for additional freehold premises in Swansea, in order to help us meet ever increasing demand for our services.
“UWTSD and Swansea University are both undergoing important expansion programmes, prompting Swansea’s student population of around 24,000 to grow rapidly. This sees more demand for storage facilities like ours. Since we also offer low cost space for small businesses and start-ups on our sites, we find too, that establishing relationships with students while they are at university can often help to encourage them to set up businesses here, which helps to keep the local economy vibrant.”
Five new student accommodation sites are due to open in Swansea over the next two years, creating more than 3,000 new rooms. These include developments in SA1, Morfa, near the High Street and train station, and on the Kingsway, all of which are undergoing extensive redevelopment. A new international college and student residence is also now open on Swansea University’s Bay Campus and is targeting students post-Brexit from a worldwide market, including Australia and Asia.
The Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Peter Black, said: “I’m pleased to see Storage Giant expanding in Swansea and bringing employment to the City.”
Storage Giant has five locations in South Wales: Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Llanelli and Cwmbran. The company is about to open Phase Two Telford, Phase Two Cannock, and a new Bristol mixed use scheme in Brislington.
