The town of Wigston and the surrounding Leicestershire area can now enjoy a new state-of-the-art space for events and activities, with the completion of a £1.2million community and sports centre – led by Midlands contractor G F Tomlinson.
The construction of Thythorn Hill Community and Sports Centre commenced in November 2018 and completed at the end of August – following the demolition of the former building on the site at Horsewell Lane.
Opening in September, the centre will symbolise the latest chapter in Horsewell Lane’s history; providing a modern community facility for not only existing groups, but new people to the area, with changing facilities for local sports clubs, a pre-school nursery and a new meeting room and main hall which will be available to hire.
Former occupant Little Fishes Pre-School will be returning to the site after its previous occupancy in the old building, with a new, safe and modern environment for the children to learn and grow.
New youth clubs and local football teams will now also take advantage of the space, including Wigston Club for Young People, Wigston Forum, Wigston Tennis Club and Wigston Foxes football team.
The new centre has been designed with a larger base in mind compared to the previous building, which was demolished as part of the development, as well as improved exterior parking.
The construction contract for the centre was secured by G F Tomlinson through the DPS PAGABO framework for client Oadby and Wigston Borough Council with the Employer’s Agent, Faithful and Gould. It marks the contractor’s first project on this framework and also with the council, with aims to expand further into Leicestershire in the future on new developments.
Chris Flint, director at G F Tomlinson, said: “We’re excited to finally be able to announce completion on the new community and sports centre in Wigston. It is an important hub within the region and the new and improved building will positively benefit a vast range of groups and teams within the area.
“Here at G F Tomlinson, we pride ourselves on giving back to the community through our work, and by providing top facilities like Thythorn Hill, it allows different communities to come together through positive sporting and team activities and events.”
