Renowned Birmingham chef and restaurateur, Aktar Islam, will open his latest restaurant – Pulperia – at the city’s Brindleyplace estate.
Pulperia is a celebration of Argentine food and culture inspired by Aktar’s time in the country, combining a range of influences into a dining experience and drawing on the tradition of the asado; starting a meal with small plates, before moving on to smoky steaks cooked on the traditional Parilla.
Pulperia will be truly immersive dining experience, celebrating the Argentine love affair with beef offering a range of unique cuts from naturally reared purebreeds and will be the only restaurant in the city serving 17-year-old Galician Blonde, widely regarded as the best steak in the world. The diverse menu will also include fish, grilled chicken and vegetarian options.
Situated in a ground floor unit at Three Brindleyplace and opening directly onto Central Square, the 3,971 sq ft space is currently undergoing a fit-out and is expected to be open to the public in November.
Birmingham-born Aktar has a long history of delivering dining innovation in the city, he was the first to introduce Argentine cuisine to the midlands back in 2011. His most recent ventures – Opheem and Legna, both located on Summer Row – opened to widespread acclaim in 2018 and have been listed in the Michelin guide within weeks of opening.
Aktar said: “I’ve spent a lot of time in Argentina and have been fortunate enough to have had some truly wonderful experiences in the country, which I want to share with diners in Birmingham. A truly great dining experience is built around quality, and from the ingredients to the plush dining room every element should reflect this ethos.
“There’s never been a more exciting time for Birmingham with the volume of businesses and visitors coming to the city and Brindleyplace represents a truly great location. We’re all now looking forward to opening our doors and welcoming our first diners.”
Pulperia represents the third significant food and beverage operator to take space at the estate recently, following lettings to the Alchemist and Cosy Club, demonstrating continued demand by high profile operators for quality locations.
The Brindleyplace estate is asset managed by Hines.
James Campbell Adamson, Hines, said: “We are hugely pleased at the prospect of welcoming Aktar Islam to Brindleyplace. The levels of confidence in Birmingham generally and this part of the city in particular, are providing an increasing sense of activity and vibrancy.
“With hundreds of new apartments due to be delivered in the area, as well as infrastructure developments such as the Midland Metro extension due to put a stop right outside Brindleyplace, this a fantastic time for the estate.
“Our vision has always been to ensure that Brindleyplace is recognised as one of Birmingham’s most attractive destinations for both commercial and leisure occupiers. Coming off the back of the recent refurbishment works that we’ve undertaken to both 3 and 4 Brindleyplace, and the recent letting to WeWork this is further evidence that our investment was well founded.”
Avison Young represented Hines in the completion of the deal.
