Cubex has appointed HTA Design to lead on the design of a masterplan for Frome Gateway in Bristol, together with Avison Young, who will act as planning consultants on the project.
The site at Frome Gateway is located on a key entrance into the city and provides a rare opportunity to create a new community within central Bristol. A significant area of largely industrial land lying either side of the River Frome, it also borders Riverside Park and Newfoundland Way, one of the principle traffic routes into the city and Cabot Circus shopping centre. Identified by Bristol City Council in the emerging Local Plan, the area has the potential to create up to 1500 new homes, commercial space, community amenities and public realm improvements for the city.
The area holds the prospect of becoming a new, balanced riverfront neighbourhood within walking distance of the heart of Bristol. Situated at a key arrival point into the city centre, the masterplan will be able to address the pressing need for different types of new homes in the city centre and create a new place with its own sense of identity and improved connections to the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Gavin Bridge, executive director at Cubex, said: “There’s a huge opportunity to completely transform this important area of Bristol to create a healthy new neighbourhood for Bristol, one that is balanced, inclusive and works for everyone. Our focus, as we start work on shaping the future of Frome Gateway, is on delivering a place that is well designed, high quality, sustainable and most importantly, looks to tackle the pollution levels.
“Whilst we already have a number of secured landholding interests within the area, we would be delighted to work collaboratively with other landowners and business in the area to create a single, coordinated and deliverable new neighbourhood.”
HTA design, a leading masterplanner, has significant experience in the South West and nationally. Recent local projects include Hanham Hall, a zero carbon scheme near Bristol consisting of 188 new homes, public realm and a refurbished hall and phase one of the masterplan of 700 homes at Mulberry Park at Foxhill, Bath, with Curo. They have also created a large masterplan of 2000 homes at Greenford Quay in Ealing, London complemented by new amenities and public realm centred around Regents Canal.
Simon Bayliss, managing partner at HTA Design, said: “Frome Gateway is a great opportunity to create an attractive new place for local residents, businesses and the wider community, right in the heart of Bristol. This is a significant project for our growing Bristol office that follows our award-winning work at nearby Hanham Hall and Mulberry Park.”
