A £200,000 investment is to brighten up the experience of shoppers and traders at Swansea Market.
Swansea Council has commissioned a new lighting system which will improve things for visitors, cut energy costs and make the venue easier to manage.
The work is being carried out by Llansamlet-based RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services.
Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “This important upgrade is exciting news for shoppers and traders.
“Swansea Market is a jewel in the area’s crown and it’s good that it will have some extra brightness as we celebrate our 50th anniversary as a city.”
Swansea Market Traders Federation chairman Chris Evans said: “We support the plans, including the extension of the new lighting to the market entrances and to areas that have traditionally been a little darker than others.
“We’re delighted that the works will be undertaken largely overnight so as to minimise disruption to stalls.”
RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services director Dave Kieft said: “As a specialist local contractor we’re delighted to be undertaking this work at an important location in our home city.”
The upgrade work began this week (note w/c April 8) and will go continue for up to eight weeks.
The market’s existing lighting infrastructure is being removed and replaced with a modern and more efficient LED scheme. This will be easier to maintain – and more cost effective.
Throughout the re-fit, the market will remain open as usual – Monday-Friday 8am-5.30pm and Saturday 7.30am-5.30pm.
Swansea Market is the largest indoor market in Wales, an award winning, historic venue that offers tourists and residents a unique experience.
More than 100 stalls sell a wide selection of fresh, local produce and traditional Welsh goods as well as gifts, jewellery and accessories, cosmetics, leather goods and more. There are cafés and coffee shops for shoppers to recharge their batteries.
