North East independent commercial property consultants Carver Commercial has brokered a deal to help Darlington Building Society expand its headquarters into new larger offices.

Carver Commercial has let two new high specification office buildings, totalling 10,500 sq ft, with 70 car parking spaces, at Morton Road, Yarm Road Business Park, Darlington, to Darlington Building Society on a 10 year lease.

The new two-storey detached office buildings are located opposite Darlington Building Society’s former HQ building and were speculatively developed by R Bland Ltd.

Darlington Building Society Chief Executive Colin Fyfe was impressed by the quality of the new buildings. He says: “We now have the additional quality office space we need and sufficient car parking space to accommodate all our staff now and in the future. We look forward to sharing the space with community organisations and groups, such as Darlington Cares, as well as inviting people looking for a mortgage to our mortgage advice centre which has extended opening hours. ”

Julie Wallin, Director of Carver Commercial, says: “This is a great result for R Bland Ltd, securing such a high calibre tenant as Darlington Building Society with a strong covenant. The deal is a just reward for my client taking the risk to develop these office buildings speculatively at a time when there is very little new office development in the town, and currently only sporadic requirements for office space from 5,000 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft.”

R Bland Ltd occupies a third office building on the same site on Morton Road, which it built itself. Phil Bland, Managing Director of R Bland says: “We realised that when Carver Commercial let the ground floor of our building to N Power that there was an appetite in Darlington for high quality office space with plenty of car parking, so we decided to construct a further two buildings. By developing ourselves, and using our own skilled tradespeople, we can build to a very high quality.

“We worked closely with Darlington Building Society on the interior fit-out and internal specifications to ensure that everything met their corporate standards.”
