A new Premium Designer Outlet Centre with the potential to generate two thousand jobs could be built in Oldbury subject to Cabinet approval of an extension to the agreement for a developer to prepare plans.
The new 200,000 sq ft designer-led outlet centre could be built on land just off Junction 2 of the M5, in a multi-million pound project that would feature top brand stores and leisure facilities as well as cafes and restaurants.
The additional jobs would represent a 2% increase in total employment in Sandwell while the development will bring a £200m investment to the area. As well as generating permanent employment once complete, several hundred jobs would also be created or supported during the construction phase.
Following approval of the extended agreement by Sandwell Council’s cabinet, the member for regeneration and economic investment, Councillor Paul Moore, said: “The extension will allow the developer, Jeremy Knight-Adams, sufficient time to work on his proposals for the site, consult with local people on the plans and compile all necessary reports in order to submit a planning application.”
The developer expects to submit a full application by autumn 2018. Jeremy Knight-Adams said: “I am whole-heartedly committed to delivering an exciting project for the people of Sandwell. My team and I look forward to fully engaging with local people and all interested parties as our plans evolve.”
The project, subject to planning approval, would be built on 55 acres of council-owned land on Lion Farm Playing Fields, close to Junction 2 of the M5, the A4123 and Birchley Island.
If the proposals were to go ahead, the developer would work with Sandwell Council to provide new, enhanced sports facilities within Sandwell.
A full planning application is anticipated to be submitted by autumn 2018. This will be subject to a comprehensive public consultation.
