George Roberts, Head of London Markets at Cushman & Wakefield, comments on Transport Secretary Chris Grayling’s latest backing for Crossrail 2, set out in a joint statement with the Mayor of London:
George Roberts, Head of London Markets, Cushman & Wakefield, said: “Great cities are built on great infrastructure and London’s success through the years has gone hand-in-hand with its accessibility. Whether by river, road, rail, air or underground – the ease with which people move around the city has always been critically important to London’s status. This absolutely remains the case, even as we strive for world-leading connectivity in the digital sense.
“With borrowing costs at historic lows, there has never been a better time to be investing in future infrastructure. The challenge for Chancellor Phillip Hammond is his need to back projects that will deliver an immediate fiscal stimulus. While Crossrail 2 has a much longer timeline than that, it is the role of government to plan for the long term and Crossrail 2 will play a vital role in helping unlock regeneration, just as Crossrail 1, the Elizabeth Line, has done. Its proposed route also means it is also likely to have an even more profound effect on unleashing much-needed new residential development than Crossrail 1 and in the process addressing another issue of vital importance to the capital’s ongoing success.”
