Commenting on the news that electrification of the main rail line between Cardiff and Swansea won’t be happening, Liz Maher, President of the South and Mid Wales Chambers of Commerce, said:
“The business community in Swansea and west Wales will feel let down by this decision, and it seems a little short-sighted by the UK government. Rail electrification would have demonstrated a much firmer commitment to growing the economy in Swansea and west Wales and would maximise the investment being made in the City Deal.
“However, we must not dwell on this set-back. Swansea has so much going for it. The recently signed City Deal, and the developments planned for the city centre, will help boost the economy in Swansea and surrounding areas, and Swansea continues to be ambitious with its bid to be the UK City of Culture.
“The South and Mid Wales Chambers of Commerce will continue to campaign for full electrification of the rail line to Swansea, and for a positive decision on the Tidal Lagoon.”
