The new Sainsbury’s at Great Homer Street is now open. Part of the Project Jennifer redevelopment, the Sainsbury’s store offers a wide range of food and non-food products, as well as a café and clothing range. There is also an Argos store inside and a customer car park with around 460 spaces.
The Argos store, which has created around 15-20 jobs, offers thousands of popular products for immediate pickup. 20,000 products can also be ordered to collect in-store within hours and 20,000 extra products can be ordered for home delivery.
There is also be an eBay collection point so buyers can collect their eBay purchases.
The move comes after Sainsbury’s acquired Home Retail Group, which owns Argos and is part of its strategy to help its customers shop whenever and wherever they want.
The combination of Sainsbury’s and Argos will enable customers to shop conveniently through different online, mobile and store channels. It will also give customers more choice across different product ranges, creating the UK’s largest non-food retailer.
Sainsbury’s Great Homer Street store manager Chris Coulman said:

“The new shop is great news for customers, who are looking for easier, more convenient ways to shop. We’re offering them an increased range of products at great value, all under one roof.”
Paul Batho, Projects Director at St. Modwen – the company behind the regeneration scheme, said: “The opening of Sainsbury’s marks a significant milestone in the regeneration of Great Homer Street.
“Both St. Modwen and the local community welcome Sainsbury’s to Great Homer Street. The supermarket is an integral part of the regeneration of the area and it’s fantastic to see so many jobs have been created for local people.
“The new District Centre, which will be anchored by Sainsbury’s, is on track to be opened this year and it is anticipated that the regeneration of Great Homer Street will create approximately 1,000 jobs in total.”
As well as a new Sainsbury’s store, this major regeneration project will bring 80,000 sq ft of retail space, 900 free customer car parking spaces, a petrol filling station and a McDonald’s restaurant.
Major road improvements have been made, including a new junction linking Scotland Road to Great Homer Street and there will be improved links to Everton Park. The new ‘Greatie’ market facility formed an earlier phase of the scheme and this opened its doors in 2014. 102 new homes have also been built including 81 apartments specifically designed for the over 55s and more than 1,000 pupils were given a purpose built £15m school at the new Notre Dame Catholic College.

This is true regeneration and a great advert of what can be achieved when the public and private sector work together.”
