National fit out and refurbishment specialist Overbury has been nominated for a prestigious construction award after delivering an impressive new language centre in Birmingham.
The Birmingham-based team of the nationwide contractor has been nominated for Best Commercial Building at this year’s Construction Excellence Awards for the West Midlands region, following its fit out at the Library of Birmingham to create the newly-opened Brasshouse Languages Centre.
The nomination follows a series of similar industry awards for the commercial refurbishment team that works across the Midlands and East Anglia for clients including Network Rail, University of Warwick and Mills & Reeve.
With five recent awards from the industry leaders behind the Considerate Constructors Scheme, Overbury has had a great start to the year so far.
David Johnson, account manager at Overbury in Birmingham, said: “We pride ourselves on delivering award-winning fit outs and creating inspirational environments – just like the Brasshouse Languages Centre at the Library of Birmingham.
“It was a real privilege to enhance what is already a hugely important facility to the city, and we are sure that the language centre will become a real asset to the community.”
The language centre was previously based in a standalone building, adjacent to Brindley Place.
The scheme utilised space available on the first floor of the library, which was converted to a teaching facility. This allowed the existing building to be relinquished; with the additional revenue this generated funding extended opening hours for the library.
The conversion included the construction of 16 new classrooms, a welcoming new reception area, tea/coffee point and toilet facilities.
To ensure good acoustic separation, the existing suspended ceilings were adapted to enable them to run through the structural soffit. Finally, floor finishes comprised of carpets with feature areas and vinyl floor coverings to the wet areas.
The Construction Excellence Awards ceremony takes place on Friday, April 28, at the ICC in Birmingham. If Overbury wins its category, it will be entered into the nationwide competition.
