IM Properties has gained planning consent to bring a number of new restaurants to Mell Square as part of its ongoing investment in Solihull town cente.
The £1.5 million plans for Drury Lane South will build on the launch of the Italian restaurant and deli chain, Carluccio’s, when it opens its doors in early 2017. Eight existing retail units leading down from Carluccio’s into the main square, will be changed into three more appealing, larger restaurants with outdoor seating area to create a street cafe feel.
Rob Hemus from IM Properties said: “In a fast changing retail environment, where many people prefer to buy online, shopping is becoming more about socialising and these proposals are essential to ensure the long term future of Mell Square and the wider Solihull town centre.
“We hope to create a thriving hub of restaurants where people can meet up with friends, family and colleagues and enjoy the atmosphere. It will also significantly enhance the character of the existing street scene and attract potential new visitors to Solihull.”
Following the recent deal to open a Carluccios in Mell Square, it is hoped a similar caliber of operator will be drawn to the Drury Lane South area which is positioned near to the Touchwood extension proposals.
“Once complete, we hope it will encourage greater pedestrian movement between Touchwood and Mell Square as both have complementary offerings that all shoppers can enjoy.” added Rob.
The Drury Lane South plans add to the existing £4 million investment in St Alphege Place and Poplar Way by IM Properties, to improve the shopping experience.
IM Properties acquired Mell Square in 2013 and has since, significantly expanded its offering, spending £4 million on current projects and a further £28.5 million worth of investment in additional properties.
