TIS have commenced work on a prestigious contract for a complex and varied project at the £30m Life Science building, part of BioCity in Nottingham.
The five-storey state-of-the-art building will house a number of leading Life Science companies. It will provide space for more developing companies to make use of the incubator facilities and is expected to act as a catalyst to bring more Life Science employers to Nottingham, potentially creating 250 specialist bioscience jobs.
Working with the main contractor Willmott Dixon and independent building services contractor Briggs & Forrester, TIS installed systems including Fire Alarms, Disabled Refuge, Disabled WC, Intruder and CCTV together with multiple Access Control Systems.
Richard Amatt, Project Manager at TIS said, “We are delighted and proud to have been chosen for this prestigious project.
“We have used state-of-the-art solutions across all areas including the CCTV system which provides video surveillance from both fixed and PTZ IP cameras, with the addition of auto adjusting intelligent detection for added security, all available with remote secure log in options.
“None of the solutions used are ‘standard’, everything is industry leading – which is a perfect fit considering some of the brightest minds in the world will be calling BioCity home.”
The high grade Intruder Alarm System is also industry leading and can take up to 1000 users with weekly and yearly scheduling capabilities and the option for GPRS, Ethernet, PSTN, USB communications. Detection is via the dual technology PIRs with outstanding performance boasting two non overlapping detectors within one housing for optimum reliability.
Other aspects of the contract include a high tech but user-friendly Access Control system, which has the capability of controlling over 500 doors and 40,000 users. The system can provide a range of reports and will be connected through a network allowing easy programming and control via a software package.
The Fire Detection System has huge importance to the multi-level building. As well as covering corridors, offices and labs TIS have installed detection in void spaces and internal ducting. The system will monitor the Fume cupboards for health and system discharge and the use of interfaces connected to the Access Control System will unlock certain doors required for evacuation.
Pete Elliott, Project Manager at Briggs & Forrester said: “It is great to be involved in this project working on such an iconic development that will bring world leading science companies to the East Midlands.
“Working with TIS is something we look forward to, as the firm delivers a first class service, are always professional and ensure that a project is delivered on time and to budget.”
The new building features a design that includes a sunscreen created by local artist Wolfgang Buttress, and utilising Willmott Dixon’s industry leading sustainability track record, it will be connected to the district heating system, and so energy needs will be provided from burning the city’s waste.
The site was bought by Nottingham City Council and subsequently cleared and decontaminated. The facility will be fitted with high-tech biology and chemistry laboratories which will be built in a range of sizes to allow companies to expand, with ancillary space for commercial leasing to both start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises.
TIS have maintained a 100% working safe record onsite and continue its safe systems of work practices.
