Sovereign Centros, the UK retail and leisure developer and asset manager, has submitted a planning application for the latest phase of the multi million pound redevelopment at Telford Shopping Centre.
A detailed application has been made for the redevelopment of Telford Bus Station while outline plans have also been submitted for the creation of up to 70,000 sq ft of new retail units around Wrekin Square and a new entrance from Northfield Street.
The plan is to create a new mall within the centre, linking New Street and Sherwood Street, to dramatically improve shopper access around the town centre.
Guy Beaumont, Developer and Asset Manager at Sovereign Centros, which is leading the redevelopment, commented: “The new Bus Station will provide modern facilities and a far more welcoming environment for our customers arriving into Telford by bus. At the same time it will allow us to build larger stores to accommodate the needs of fashion retailers.
“Work is progressing well on the Southern Quarter, which will see the creation of a new dining and leisure destination next to IMAX Cineworld and existing restaurants at Southwater. TGI Friday’s, Prezzo and Handmade Burger Company are already committed and we are in discussions with a number of exciting operators about the two remaining units.
“We are also well underway with the redevelopment of the former Asda store to create up to seven new retail units totalling 70,000 sq ft. The Southern Quarter will be completed in the first quarter 2017 and the Northern Quarter will follow later in the year.”
Outline planning for 800,000 sq ft of new retail and leisure space at Telford Shopping Centre was secured in 2013. The centre is already the largest, covered shopping mall in the UK and provides more than 1 million sq ft of retail and leisure. Anchor tenants include House of Fraser, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and Primark. Other major tenants include H&M, Zara, New Look, Topshop/Topman, Next, Boots, River Island and JD Sports.
Plans for the redevelopment of the bus station have been finalised in close partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council and Arriva Midlands & Shires. Over 1,500 people also viewed the plans during a major public consultation at the shopping centre in March.
A £1.3m contribution towards the cost of redeveloping the Bus Station has been secured by Telford & Wrekin Council from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership. A decision is expected before the end of the year and, if approved, the new Bus Station could be complete by mid 2017.
