Building work is about to start on Aldi’s latest store in Cornwall after the supermarket giant finalised its purchase of the site on the outskirts of Redruth.
The retail chain is expected to open in the autumn at the site of the former Avers Garage just off the roundabout at Close Hill on the A3047.
Last year Cornwall Council granted permission for the German owned budget supermarket chain to build a store covering a gross floor area of 1,254 m² with 117 customer and staff parking spaces.
This will be the sixth Aldi to be built in Cornwall. The county has existing stores in Camborne, St Austell, Truro, Newquay and Liskeard and its understood Aldi have requirements for further sites in Cornwall.
The new store would create up to 40 new full and part-time jobs alongside construction and labour roles.
Aldi acquired the site from Porthia Limited for £1.23 million in a deal negotiated by Miller Commercial Chartered Surveyors.
Porthia Limited has retained half the site (1.3 acres) with the intention of developing this for residential or commercial use.
Partner at Miller Commercial Peter Heather says “We are delighted to work on behalf of Porthia Ltd and secure this deal with Aldi on such a prominent site.
It also marks an important point in the regeneration of Redruth – where adjoining sites are currently being developed for residential use and where in the town centre Miller Commercial is engaged in a number of projects.”
