The boss of the Institute of Directors in the West Midlands has hit out at the proposed watering down of Government proposals to charge fees for employment tribunal claims.
The Government estimates that threequarters of claimants will find themselves partially or totally exempt from tribunal fees and the IoD is arguing that this proportion is much too high.
John Rider, IoD West Midlands chairman, said they felt very strongly that the consultation – Charging Fees in Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal – did not do enough to counter weak and vexatious claims.
“You either charge for employment tribunal claims, or you don’t. If you introduce a measure and then restrict it in such a way that it only applies to a minority, then what was the point of the exercise in the first place,” he asked.
“Too many weak and downright vexatious claims are clogging up the system.
“If there is a good reason to introduce charges, then let’s do it. Otherwise, why have we bothered?” he said.
