Satvir Bungar, a director at accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP in Birmingham, has been named Professional of the Year at Asian Achievers Awards 2015.
The 15th annual Asian Achievers Awards took place on Friday 18 September at Grosvenor House in London, highlighting the outstanding achievements and contributions of Asians across the business, media and community sectors.
Significant nominations and votes were received for the awards, paying tribute to inspirational individuals from the Asian community.
Praised for his career achievements in business and finance, BDO accountant Satvir faced competition from professionals in the fields of global consultancy, medicine, law, banking and finance.
Other winners of the night included Nish and Sach Kukadia, the founders of Secret Sales (Entrepreneur of the Year), Iqbal Ahmed OBE of Seamark Plc (Businessperson of the Year) and England cricketer Moeen Ali (Sports Personality of the Year).
Commenting on his win, Satvir said: “The calibre of Asian talent across the UK is outstanding. To be nominated and then to go on to win the award is a huge honour and achievement.”
Guests at the awards ceremony included Cherie Blair QC, London Mayor candidate Sadiq Khan MP and His Excellency Ranjan Mathai, the Indian High Commissioner.
Chief Guest for the evening was Secretary of State for Defence, Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP. Beginning by congratulating all the nominees, Fallon spoke about the admirable success of British Asians across all sectors of UK life.
“I’ve seen statistics showing British Asians contribute six per cent of UK GDP, despite making up just four per cent of the population,” said Fallon.
He mentioned, however, that Asian representation in public services and the army was still minimal, and hoped to encourage more Asians by offering better opportunities.
“We must do better. This isn’t just about tokenism, or creating a more integrated society, it’s about attracting the brightest and the best from the talent in our midst,” said Fallon.
Satvir has almost 20 years accounting and commercial experience. He is a corporate finance director in the M&A team at BDO on Colmore Row, advising listed companies, international corporates, entrepreneurs and private equity investors on a variety of transactions. He also heads up the firm’s national facilities management sector group in the M&A business.
