Retail giant Aldi is set to start construction of one of its discount supermarkets in a Luton suburb before the end of the summer, according to leading property consultancy Kirkby Diamond.
The food store has acquired a 1.6 acre site at Scott Road, Sundon Park, north Luton, and building work is expected to start on site this summer.
An opening date has not yet been finalised but when the store opens, it will create more than 40 full and part-time jobs for local people.
Kirkby Diamond, which has offices Milton Keynes, Luton and Bedford, was appointed by Bedfordshire-based Forte Developments to market the site and worked to bring the retail giant to the area. The property agents also secured the design and build agreement with Aldi.
Eamon Kennedy, head of commercial agency at Kirkby Diamond, acquired Scott Road Industrial Estate, together with the 1.6 acre site in 2009. The site has remained undeveloped since the estate was built 1999/2000.
He said the 16,500 sq ft store will benefit local residents who wanted a good quality local food store, and also the wider community as it will provide parking for Sundon Park Centre visitors.
“The community in Sundon Park has long wanted a food store, so bringing Aldi will provide a much-needed facility,” he said. “However, crucially, this development will also alleviate the pressure on the existing parking provision in the area, thereby helping to create a better neighbourhood.”
