Work has begun on the building of a pair of waterfront tourist facilities in Swansea Bay due to be ready to welcome their first visitors by mid-summer.
The £1.2m project will see the construction of two separate single storey buildings on the foreshore in Swansea Bay.
A multi-purpose watersports facility room with servery and changing facilities, showers and toilets, is being built on the promenade at St Helen’s.
While a tourist information centre and office with changing facilities and toilets is being constructed at The Knab Rock, on the promenade, at Mumbles.
South Wales-based opco is building the two seaside buildings which are to be completed and ready for use by the end of July/beginning of August.
Kite-surfing, kite-buggying and stand-up paddle boarding are among the activities that could feature at the centre. Lifesaving courses could also be run from the building.
opco Managing Director Nigel Coulter said: “We’re delighted to be working with the City & County of Swansea to deliver this high profile and prestigious visitor schemes in prime positions at world-acclaimed Swansea Bay.
“We’re now cracking on with the building of these two, fine facilities for Swansea Bay so that the very many tourists and visitors to the area, as well as local people, will be able to more fully enjoy this unrivalled seaside location this summer thanks to the benefits afforded by these new amenities.”
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “Most people would agree that Swansea’s best asset is our spectacular bay and seaside scenery.
“But we need to maximise its potential and these schemes will help Swansea continue to build on its reputation as an outstanding location for water sports and tourism.
“We’re delighted to be working in close partnership with the Welsh Government and opco on another hugely positive project for the city.”
