The Highways and Utilities Division of Nottinghamshire based engineering and specialist contractor, North Midland Construction PLC (NM Group) is about to start work on a £3.5m project for Sheffield City Council, the first phase of a larger project to regenerate Sheffield’s Riverside Business District and Castlegate area.
The council has worked in partnership with the University of Sheffield Landscape School, Amey and Robert Bray Associates to design and improve what has been dubbed the ‘grey to green’ corridor.
The work will enhance the environment and improve the area’s connections with the rest of the city centre, Kelham Island and the Victoria Quays by rejuvenating 1.3 kilometres of redundant road space and creating a new public area which will include perennial meadows, a sustainable urban drainage system and rain gardens.
Geoff Poyzer, managing director of the Highways and Utilities Division of NM Group, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Grey to Green Phase 1 project. This will further strengthen the relationship that had been developed over a number of years with Sheffield City Council during the construction of numerous public realm and highways schemes”.
This initial phase of the project is due for completion in December 2015.
