Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP has strengthened the senior team with the addition of two directors in its Southampton tax department. Andy Hamman and Mark Doherty are adding yet more weight to BDO’s multi-disciplinary tax offering to clients across the Central South region.
Hamman, recently promoted, specialises in employment taxes and has over 24 years’ experience advising businesses on the numerous aspects of being an employer. Not only does he operate across a wide range of sectors here in the Central South, he is also one of the UK’s leading specialists in the hospitality industry, specifically advising on the subject of tips and troncs. Hamman explains: “We work with clients to ensure that their employment tax structures operate effectively in terms of both cost reduction and proactive compliance.”
Doherty joins from another global firm and has considerable experience advising medium and large businesses on VAT and Customs Duties across all sectors, especially Consumer Goods and Retail. Doherty comments: “Over 160 countries worldwide now have a VAT or Goods and Services Tax (“GST”) system and our main goal is to help management teams gain comfort that they are compliant globally, which is challenging but fundamentally important in light of the current debate around Tax Governance and Transparency.
“With rates now in excess of 19% on average, we typically find numerous solutions to enable businesses to better manage VAT/GST, thereby enhancing cash flows and improving process efficiencies. VAT is still a relatively new tax and businesses in the region face some upcoming changes around the UK treatment of Pension Schemes and Holding Company costs to name but a few. With a four-strong team focussing exclusively on Indirect Taxes, BDO Southampton now has greater capability to help businesses meet these challenges.”
