The Cribbs Causeway and Filton area could become a major economic powerhouse in the coming years, according to property experts CBRE Bristol.
The owners of The Mall shopping centre have recently announced expansion plans, which could see the complex almost double in size within the next decade. The plans include a new hotel, housing and leisure facilities. Meanwhile, at least 7,000 new homes have been earmarked for the former Filton Airfield site along with new schools, infrastructure and businesses.
Richard Moore, Director, Agency & Development at CBRE Bristol, commented: “Much attention has been focused on Bristol City Centre and the Enterprise Zone around Temple Meads Station. But it is easy to forget that there are a number of major retail, leisure and housing schemes in the pipeline for the Cribbs Causeway area and most of them are more than likely to go ahead.
“Added to this, the aerospace industry in Filton and cluster of high-tech companies are continuing to flourish and expand. These two sectors have emerged from the recession relatively unscathed and the signs are that they will continue to expand for many years to come.”
Richard Moore added: “There was some concern that Cribbs Causeway would struggle following the arrival of Cabot Circus but that has proved not to be the case. The area has long benefited from good transport links and easy access in comparison to the centre of Bristol, meaning it has been able to draw on a wide geographical market. With further expansion planned, The Mall looks set to cement its position as both a thriving centre for economic activity, leisure, commerce and industry and one of the most important shopping destinations in the South West.”
