DU Construction – Anglesey’s largest construction company – is expanding, building a new operational centre and investing in new plant to be in pole position to maximise opportunities from the Wylfa Newydd development and other projects on the island.
The £470,000 investment, which has been supported by £210,000 from the Welsh Government’s Economic Growth Fund, will create twenty new jobs within Anglesey Enterprise Zone.
Construction of their new centre on Penrhos Industrial Estate, Holyhead, starts this month and will include offices designed to BREEAM specifications, substantial storage facilities, a new joinery workshop and new plant and equipment.
DU Construction works across the construction sector for the public and private sectors including new build, heritage, renovation and property maintenance work as well as demolition. It has also been involved with Horizon Nuclear Power’s supply chain for nearly three years working on projects related to the planned new power station.
Director Mark Blackwell who started the business in 1992 said:” Business is really taking off now after the recession and we have seen turnover increase year on year. There are a number of opportunities in the pipeline and we are delighted to have worked with Horizon Nuclear Power and look forward to working with them in the future.
“Our new centre in Holyhead will be ideally located to take advantage of some of these major projects and will help our business grow. The new joinery workshop means we will be able to carry out all of this work in-house instead of outsourcing, enabling us to become more competitive . The secure storage facility is essential and will replace a temporary store and means we can invest in more plant and materials to service new contracts.
“ Support from the Welsh Government has been pivotal in taking our expansion forward – we would not have been able to go ahead without this funding.”
Economy Minister Edwina Hart said:” It’s great news to hear how Welsh Government funding is helping Welsh businesses become more competitive, expand, win new business and create new jobs.
“I am delighted to hear DU Construction is creating jobs in one of our enterprise zones and benefiting from the investment associated with Wylfa Newydd.”
DU Construction, which currently employs forty people working on projects on Anglesey and in Gwynedd, was awarded a major contract with Horizon Nuclear Power for demolition activities and associated ecological works. This included building a bat barn and an owl barn with largely recycled building materials, and the removal of around fifteen unsafe and uninhabitable buildings on Horizon’s proposed site.
It is currently subcontracting plant and drivers in support of the extensive Ground Investigation Works at the site under a twelve month contract with Structural Soils Ltd of Bristol.
