Leicester-based, award-winning architectural and project management company, rg+p Ltd, has overseen a circa £100,000 renovation of a former factory on Marjorie Street, Leicester, to revitalise a sport and education academy and community hub.
rg+p provided detailed drawings and helped the charity to achieve planning, as well as adhere to building and fire regulations. Located on the bank of the River Soar in Belgrave, the newly renovated centre will be known as The Waterfront Sport and Education Academy and comprises a two-ring boxing gymnasium, exercise room with changing areas, games room, dance studio, ICT facilities, classrooms and music production studios.
As part of its commitment to The Waterfront, rg+p provided its services pro bono and worked closely with all partners to deliver the project on time and to budget.
“We are delighted to be at this stage of the project and to see the building in full use already. Working with The Trust and partners has shown great collaboration between the public and private sectors and we hope this spirit of partnership is reflected in the building’s use.” Said rg+p’s managing director, Bill Smedley.
The renovation work has been substantially funded, organised and completed by The Norman Gill Charitable Trust, with additional funding from Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund and material donations from Barratt Homes and Marks Electrical.
Norman Gill, founder of The Trust added: “The project is a vital centre for young people in and around the Belgrave area and will offer more opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of local people.”
The Waterfront Sport and Education Academy is now open for use and is holding an open afternoon on Thursday 26th June.
rg+p is also working with the charity Soft Touch Arts on its new centre in New Walk.
