Construction work is to start on an 80-bedroom Premier Inn hotel in Stourbridge just off Birmingham Street. The work is set to start following the sale of the four-acre site to Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants.
The joint scheme is expected to be completed in the autumn and will be part of an £8 million mixed-use development, which will include an 80-bed Premier Inn, a Brewer’s Fayre restaurant, a drive-through unit and 122 car parking spaces.
John Bates, head of acquisitions for UK and Ireland for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “We are delighted to be bringing an 80-Bedroom Premier Inn to Stourbridge, with our development partner Barberry Developments. The development represents a significant £6 million investment in the town and will create 65 new jobs in the local area. It will also contribute to the wider regeneration of the town-centre, attracting new visitors to the local area and boosting local trade.
“The new Premier Inn will be a great addition to the town and will provide the consistent high-quality, yet affordable accommodation, our customers expect. We look forward to opening our doors a soon as possible.”
Barberry director Martyn Cartwright said: “I am delighted to announce that the sale of the land to Whitbread has been successfully completed and the development phase can now get underway. It is a first class site for a Premier Inn hotel and Brewer’s Fayre restaurant and there is room for further development to complement these excellent new facilities.
“The site is an ideal location for a mixed-use scheme and it is well positioned for visitors to explore the Black Country and surrounding countryside. The scheme will create new jobs, attract additional visitors and support key businesses in the area.”
He added: “There remains an additional one-acre adjoining site which is suitable under existing planning consent for a drive-through, restaurant or retail. Alternative uses may be considered subject to planning.”
The development is a joint venture between Worcestershire-based property developers Barberry Developments, Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants and Cox Hire Ltd. The freehold site, occupied for many years by Cox Hire Ltd, is allocated within the Stourbridge Action Plan and is suitable for a range of developments, including retail, restaurant, drive-through or leisure.
