Following the completion of a £50 million Morrisons supermarket in Sheldon, Birmingham, Chase Midlands Estates Ltd has unveiled plans to build five retail units on the adjacent land.
The scheme forms the second phase of the company’s development at the former Severn Trent Water site on the Coventry Road.
It will comprise five open A1 retail units ranging from 3,500 sq ft to 11,000 sq ft and capable of accommodating mezzanine floors, offering a total of 54,635 sq ft of retail space. The development includes a service yard and 585 car parking spaces shared with the new 106,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket.
Construction work on the retail units is due to begin in late 2014 and be completed by summer 2015.
Tim Haslam, a director of Stratford-upon-Avon-based Chase Midland Estates Ltd, said: “We envisage that retailers will be attracted by the high footfall that is likely to be generated by the busy commuter route and the new Morrisons supermarket.
“The retail development will enhance and support Sheldon’s existing shopping centre by creating a level pedestrian route from the shared shoppers car park to the existing shops.”
The development is located in the Birmingham suburb of Sheldon, six miles from the city centre. The site is supported by excellent road connections, via the A45 Coventry Road, which connects to both the Birmingham Ring Road and M42, junction 6.
Michael Peachey of letting agents Ramsdens said: “We anticipate significant demand for the retail units from fashion, footwear and other major open A1 retailers looking to serve the affluent south Birmingham and Solihull residential catchment populations. Occupiers and shoppers will be able to take advantage of the scheme’s prominent location adjoining Morrisons’ new flagship store and fronting the A45 major arterial route from Birmingham International Airport, the NEC and Coventry.”
