Gemini PR & Marketing is kicking off the New Year with a new face. The Nottingham-based PR firm has appointed its first ever apprentice in a bid to keep up with the company’s continuing growth and offer a valuable opening in the world of PR.
Rachel Kelso, 18, completed A Levels in History, German and English Literature at the West Bridgford School in 2013 before seeking her first step on the career ladder. Turning to the National Apprenticeships website for inspiration she quickly noted the promising vacancy at Gemini PR & Marketing and, having secured the position, began work with the firm at the start of January.
The tasks carried out by Rachel on a daily basis include writing and issuing press releases, assisting in the organisation of events, carrying out research and providing general administrative support to the team at Gemini. The level 2 apprenticeship lasts for 12 months, after which Rachel will have the option of undertaking the level 3 apprenticeship for a further 12-18 months.
Commenting on her new appointment Rachel said: “I am thrilled to have a clear path ahead and delighted to enjoy the work so much. With little experience of an office environment, I found that I was unsuccessful with other job applications and that’s why the apprenticeship scheme is so valuable; it breaks the cycle of unemployment that can so easily trap willing and capable workers who simply have a lack of experience. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone as they have a great deal to offer.”
The qualification behind the apprenticeship is being provided by Training Services 2000, part of Learning Unlimited, which offers over 35 different apprenticeship frameworks covering a number of different sectors.
Paul Champion, Operations Director at Learning Unlimited, explains: “It’s great to hear of companies such as Gemini PR & Marketing that are taking on an apprentice for the very first time and recognising the business benefits. The development of apprenticeships has come a long way in recent years and we now offer over 35 frameworks that cover a huge range of industries, from marketing to beauty therapy.”
Councillor Nick McDonald, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Jobs and Growth, said: “The City Council is determined to improve local people’s job prospects and apprenticeships are a big part of that. I’m pleased to see this long established local business taking on an apprentice. Our Apprenticeship Hub has already helped place almost 600 young people in apprenticeships in Nottingham, working with local businesses to identify their specific needs and provide a range of solutions, from funding to recruitment support.”
Gemini is as one of the longest-established PR firms in Nottingham, having been in operation for over 20 years. Dianne Allen, Managing Director of Gemini said of the apprenticeship: “It’s very important that young people are able to find an opening in the workplace and we are delighted that Gemini has the ability to offer one. Taking on an apprentice is an exciting step both for us and for Rachel”
