Planning permission has been granted for two new sports pavilions to be developed at the University of Nottingham’s Riverside Sports Complex, alongside the River Trent. The £4.8m development has been designed by Nottingham-based CPMG Architects and will see old unsuitable changing rooms replaced with modern efficient facilities.
The two 800sq m pavilions are to be built 1.5m above the ground. A gabion wall cloaks the exterior base and is designed to allow flood water to pass through. The pavilions have also been designed to sensitively blend into the greenbelt land with a contemporary design response to the location.
The pavilions will provide spacious and flexible changing facilities to support the universities continued commitment to sport at this site. 38 changing rooms are being provided to accommodate teams playing a range of sports including football, cricket, rugby and American football. They will also provide new viewing galleries.
Kier is the main contractor on the scheme and worked with CPMG to put together the bid on this project, with other Nottingham companies CPW and Millward also part of the project team providing specialist consultation and support. Gaskell Associates are the Project Managers.
This project adds to CPMG’s growing portfolio of design work for the University of Nottingham that includes the new Humanities building, the Satellite Medical School, and the Plant Sciences building at Sutton Bonington Campus. Chris White, Group Director at CPMG said; “We’re excited to be working on another project with the University of Nottingham, these sports pavilions will provide valuable additional resources for students and staff. We’ve faced a number of challenges in designing this project that have been overcome by close consultation with the environment agency and the planners who have supported us in creating a design that is both functional, attractive and perhaps most importantly well protected.”
Richard Wigginton, Senior Capital Projects Officer at the University of Nottingham said, “We thank CPMG for their diligence and commitment in working with the whole team in obtaining planning consent for this challenging project. The pavilions are attractive but pragmatic and will enhance the site and provide first class facilities for many years to come. We look forward to their effective delivery and opening for the next academic year”
Construction is due to start in the New Year.
