Two Midlands shopping centres, managed by property agent DTZ, have scooped top honours at the Green Apple Environmental Awards as part of a national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.
Regent Arcade in Cheltenham won the coveted Gold Champion Award, whilst Lower Precinct shopping centre in Coventry received the Gold award.
Held at the House of Commons on Monday 11 November, the awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
Regent Arcade received plaudits from the judges for the energy saving measures installed as part of the centre’s multi-million pound refurbishment programme, including solar panels and a rain water harvesting system. In addition, 90% of all waste generated by the centre is now recycled.
Lower Precinct has also achieved significant cost savings through its recycling scheme, including saving over £20,000 on plastic and cardboard disposal costs
Don Lemen, Director in DTZ’s Retail Management team, commented: “This is a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment put in by the teams at Regent Arcade and Lower Precinct. It has required a significant change at the way we look at waste management but the end result is something for us all to be proud of.”
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries. Judges for the Green Apple Awards are drawn from the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
