Graham Morgan, director of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “The positive employment figures announced today are yet another step in the right direction, and are the mark of a resilient and flexible private sector that is filling the void created by public sector cuts.
“The private sector has been forced to adapt in the face of recessionary pressures, and the increase in employment figures in Wales are a direct consequence of the forward thinking shown by business leaders that has seen businesses make inroads into new markets and secure wider contracts.
“Increasing youth unemployment is always a concern, however, we can expect some increase to the figures for this quarter as school leavers and former students find their way into the world of work.
“A more pressing issue is the number of young people leaving education without the skills or training needed to take advantage of the job opportunities that are available here in Wales.
“The South Wales Chamber of Commerce has consistently looked at the miss-match between the skill requirements of the wider business community, and the subjects being studied by a majority of young people, and firmly believe that a concerted effort is needed to connect the two.
“For example, a six-month intensive businesses studies course, targeted at youngsters seeking employment, would help to develop their core skills while equipping them for a business environment, and giving them a real chance in the world of work.”
