Employees from GE Aviation Wales have completed work on a brand new picnic and play area at Waun Wen Community Centre.
The team of around 15 volunteers from the company, which specialises in the servicing of aircraft engines, created an outdoor seating and play area at the Trebanog community centre.
The new facilities will benefit a number of groups who use the centre including the elderly and toddler play group. The area will provide a place where people can relax, socialise, read, and where residents can spend time with one another.
On completing the project, GE Aviation Wales employee and project leader, Stephen Truelove said: “We are pleased to have been able to support the Waun Wen Community Centre. The new garden area will provide an open space which children and adults can use during the drier months. I would like to thank everyone who has supported this project, without your help it simply would not have been possible.”
The project utilised the land surrounding the community centre and a new seating and viewing area has been constructed, including flower beds and a new play area suitable for children to use. The play and picnic area was officially opened by local Councillor Margaret Teg at a ceremony attended by GE volunteers, Government and Business Relations Leader of GE Aviation Wales Rhys Williams, Centre Manager Mike Cude and members of the local community.
Centre Manager, Mike Cude said: “Over 4,000 people in the local community benefit from the community centre and this project will help to engage with a large number of those people and their families, helping to support the future of the centre which is a lifeline to many families in the community.
“I would like to thank the GE Aviation Wales volunteers, for all their support. The garden looks fantastic and I am confident that many will reap the benefits of the new facilities.”
GE Aviation Wales has a Corporate Social Responsibility programme which encompasses volunteering in the local community, charity initiatives and education focused schemes which aim to support local communities in the surrounding area.
