One of Nottingham’s latest housing developments has not only provided superb new apartments for local people to rent or buy on a shared ownership basis, but the scheme itself has also played a major role in the revitalisation programme of the St Ann’s area of the city.
The impressive £3.4m development, named Hibiscus Court, has seen the regeneration of a disused and dilapidated accommodation building to provide 32 two bedroom apartments primarily for the over 55s and is the first project Loughborough-based developer and contractor William Davis Ltd has undertaken in partnership with Tuntum Housing Association.
Project partners and residents gathered today (14th October 2011) to celebrate the scheme’s opening and view a show apartment following Cllr. Jon Collins, leader of Nottingham City Council, unveiling a commemorative plaque. Eight of the 32 apartments are available for sale on a shared ownership basis and the remainder offered for rent.
The completion of Hibiscus Court complements the adjacent Balisier Court, an existing Tuntum sheltered scheme also for the over 55s. Funding for the scheme has been provided by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Nottingham City Council and Tuntum Housing Association.
The scheme achieves a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 rating and has been built to Lifetime Homes standards. It utilises Nottingham City’s existing District Heating system, a sustainable heating initiative to provide heating and hot water for the new apartments. This is achieved by burning off domestic and commercial waste to provide green energy to properties across Nottingham.
Guy Higgins, managing director, William Davis commented: “This scheme is a fine example of how a well designed building can blend with the existing built environment and greatly enhance an inner city area in need of revitalisation. We are pleased that our first partnership with Tuntum Housing Association has delivered an excellent housing solution in this area of Nottingham.”
Steve White, director of operations, TunTum Housing Association said: “We are really proud of Hibiscus Court and already the tenants are starting to turn it into a real community. This project for ‘younger’ older people complements the adjacent sheltered housing scheme and is an impressive contributor to the regeneration to this part of St Ann’s.”
Cllr. Jon Collins, leader, Nottingham City Council added: ““This completes a large regeneration scheme in St Ann’s replacing Marple Square and Cheverton Court. It provides much needed quality houses for retired people linked to Tuntum Housing Association’s sheltered scheme at Balisier Court. We are pleased to have partnered Tuntum Housing Association and William Davis to deliver affordable housing for the local community.”
