The campaign to raise the outstanding £500,000 needed for a £4m project to safeguard the Underfall Yard within Bristol Harbour has received an early boost with the announcement of a major donation by the Society of Merchant Venturers.
The project aims to conserve this remarkable site, which comprises a complete set of Victorian buildings and historic machinery that is still operation. It will sustain the gritty, vibrant working environment of the site, whilst creating a unique visitor attraction.
The Merchant Venturers have pledged a grant of £20,000 towards the regeneration project, which will see the creation of a Maritime Centre of Excellence within Bristol Harbour. This will preserve for the benefit of the public its historic assets and unique character through sustainable commercial, leisure, tourism and education developments that reflect the long standing maritime history of the area.
Plans for Underfall Yard will be launched to the public at a special exhibition planned for Bristol Doors Open Day on Saturday 14 September and continue throughout that weekend. A programme of special fundraising briefings will be launched in the following week.
Peter Rilett, Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers said: “The Underfall Yard has been a vital part of Bristol life since 1805. The Underfall Yard Trust combines contemporary and traditional maritime activity and production together with learning opportunities.
“The restoration of The Underfall Yard will be of great benefit to the current community and visitors to Bristol and for future generations. This important project deserves our support, and the support of others. ”
