Leading construction firm Willmott Dixon in Wales has completed work on a £5 million transport unit in Cardiff which will provide maintenance and repair services for over 850 Cardiff City Council vehicles.
The new state-of-the-art Cardiff Central Transport Unit, which is based on Hadfield Road, houses the council’s entire Central Transport Services. As well as a commercial vehicle wash, a dedicated tyre change facility and a new fuelling facility, the depot has an MOT centre which is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm.
It also includes an authorised testing facility lane approved by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOAS), which provides testing facilities for both commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and passenger-carrying vehicles used for hire.
The depot has achieved a BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating of very good.
Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon in Wales, said: “We have worked with Cardiff City Council on several projects, including both schools and public buildings, but this is our first transport project with them. I am pleased to say that we delivered on time and on budget and that the depot is now open, providing vital services to the whole of the council’s large transport fleet.”
Cardiff Council Leader, Councillor Heather Joyce, said: “This new depot will be used to look after and repair all of our vehicles – from rubbish trucks to gritters. This will help ensure that the council’s vital front line services continue to be supported in the most effective and efficient way.
“Environmental and sustainability concerns were at the forefront of the design process for this new depot which will also boast 11 maintenance bays, a fabrication workshop, a store facility, changing rooms and mess facilities, a workshop reception, a driver waiting area, and office accommodation.”
