New tax breaks for high end TV drama production in the UK that came into effect this week have been welcomed by Economy Minister Edwina Hart.
The incentives are designed to ensure that high quality British television drama and documentaries are made in the UK instead of being filmed abroad.
Economy Minister Mrs Hart said: “These new incentives have the potential to attract more high quality drama production to Wales and will support the work we are doing on a national and international level to promote Wales as a first class, cost effective film and TV location. It will make Wales an increasingly attractive and competitive location
“We are in the fortunate position of being able to offer a unique support package from the Welsh Government. This can range from flexible funding support for television production and property development as well as a highly experienced, talented workforce delivering award-winning productions
“We have the infrastructure to support production here, as well as a variety of stunning natural locations. In addition to the BBC studios in Cardiff Bay, facilities range from the 50,000 sq ft Dragon International Studios, used for productions such as Ironclad and Merlin, to converted industrial spaces that abound in south Wales.
“As a devolved government we can work closely with producers to offer support, advice and expertise – in addition the Wales Screen Commission provide information on locations and crew, while costs are approximately 20% less than in London.”
The creative industries is a key sector of the Welsh economy with high growth potential and the Minister added that high end film and television production is key to this growth.
Last month the Minister was in Los Angeles meeting film and television producers promoting the benefits of working in Wales while plans are underway for Wales to be represented at key film and TV trade events and exhibitions in the current financial year.
In recent years Wales has seen a renaissance of TV Drama with series like Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock, being produced out of the new BBC Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff Bay. Being Human was also produced in Wales for BBC3.
Swansea Bay was chosen as location for Starz TV’s latest offering Da Vinci’s Demons, an eight-part historical fantasy drama which is set to hit TV screens across the US and UK this spring.
