The Bristol office of global real estate services firm, DTZ has won the prestigious annual Bristol Surveyors Softball tournament after beating a joint Jones LangLaSalle and Osborne Clarke (JLL/OC) team.
The DTZ squad teamed up with construction consultancy, Gleeds this year to compete in the tournament.
On route to the final, the DTZ/Gleeds team beat off stiff competition from Workman, CMS Cameron McKenna, Beachcroft, Savills and Thrings in the group stages. In the quarter finals, they faced Gregg Latchams and Colliers International, TLT Solicitors in the semi-finals, before squaring up to an ‘over confident’ JLL/OC team in the final.
DTZ/Gleeds got off to a positive start after batting first and scoring the maximum number of runs (15) through a combination of tactical hitting and the occasional big hit.
In response, JLL/OC was only able to score a paltry three runs due to some efficient fielding, in particular from DTZ’s Mike Shears who took several catches. This pattern of play continued for the next two innings with DTZ/Gleeds scoring 12 and 15 runs in the second and third innings respectively, whilst JLL/OC could only score 4 and 5.
After three innings, DTZ/Gleeds had a massive 42 runs whilst JLL/OC only managed 12 which meant that DTZ only needed 1 run from the fourth innings to win the match and competition. This was achieved two balls into the innings as DTZ’s Laura Stamboulieh ran home, followed by Nick Allan.
Team captain, DTZ’s Tom Alcock said: “We are delighted to have won this tournament, having never won it before. We clearly had a very strong team, as we didn’t have to bat in our final innings due to already being too far ahead for the opposition to catch us.”
The victorious team was awarded a trophy shield and they now have the honour of organising the competition next year.
