Cwmbran Shopping has received official recognition for being one of the most environmentally friendly organisations in the UK.
The Centre scooped a Green Apple Environment Award in a national search for Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.
Competing against 500 other nominations, Cwmbran Shopping picked up a silver award at a prestigious ceremony on November 12 at the House of Commons.
Gerry Hutchings, Centre Manager for Cwmbran Shopping, said: “This is a great achievement for Cwmbran Shopping. We always work hard as a team to ensure that we are environmentally friendly and it is great to have this recognition.
“Being environmentally friendly is something that is very important to the centre and we have many initiatives in place to help us achieve maximum sustainability.
“We currently recycle 60% of all the waste generated in the centre and also organise annual events to promote environmentally friendly products and projects. We plan to continue to expand on this in the future.”
Following the award ceremony, Cwmbran Shopping’s sustainability policies will now be published in The Green Book. Being included in this international guide to environmental best practice will mean others will be able to learn from Cwmbran’s successful policies.
Cwmbran Shopping will also be considered to represent the UK in the European Business Awards for the Environment.
The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, which is dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.
The awards began in 1994 and judges are chosen from the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institute for Waste Management and other independent bodies.
