, one of the East Midlands leading multidisciplinary practices specialising in architecture, project management and quantity surveying, has been awarded the Leicestershire Scheme and Team Award for The Madrasah project at the second annual Forum for the Built Environment (fbe) East Midlands Awards.
Sponsored by Leicestershire-based civil development engineers, M-EC, the Leicestershire Scheme and Team Award recognised The Madrasah, which is in Evington in Leicester for its high standard of architecture and eco-credentials. The scheme was also praised for its impact on the local environment, integration with the local community and was acknowledged as a fine example of new generation of educational buildings in the county.
The Madrasah, located in the heart of a principally Victorian area of Leicester city, was designed to replace an existing nursery building, creating a bespoke Nursery and Madrasah teaching facility suitable for children in the 21st Century. Adjacent to Masjid Umar Mosque, a local landmark building, the completion of the scheme will provide new facilities and a valuable resource for the wider community.
Project director for rg+p James Badley said: “The building is predominately designed to be used as a school and is exemplar of rg+p working within the Education sector. The client, designers and main contractor worked as a cohesive team, in order to approach the project with a single common vision in a productive and caring way.”
Bill Smedley, managing director, commented: “rg+p is pleased to announce the win of the Leicestershire Scheme and Team Award. Designing and creating the building was both enjoyable and revolutionary for the 21st Century community within Evington. The building was a very exciting project for the team and we are proud to be recognised for both our efforts and the positive impact it has made on the community now and in the future.”
Over 100 construction professionals from across the East Midlands gathered at The City Rooms in Leicester for the fbe awards and dinner. The awards were designed to celebrate construction projects across the region and recognise the teams behind the schemes.
