Developer and Asset Manager, MEPC, has announced a £1.1m investment into the public realm at the Wellington Place development, demonstrating a major commitment to employee wellbeing and the wider Leeds community.
With work set to commence in April, the enhancements to the public realm will see a number of additions including green walk-through routes, peaceful spaces, and dedicated areas for activities.
The improvements will complement the existing outdoor spaces of the retailers based at Wellington Place, providing an even greater experience when it comes to al fresco drinks and dining, particularly in the summer months.
Given the strong focus on wellbeing and community at the development, the major investment will not only provide more outdoor areas for employees at the development to use at their leisure and encourage a strong-work life balance, but it will also allow an extended programme of community initiatives.
Paul Pavia, Head of Development at Wellington Place, said: “It has been long recognised that quality public realm in cities can have such a positive impact – not just on the environment, but also on people. This has become increasingly prevalent over the last year with the Covid-19 pandemic, which has highlighted the value and reliance on outdoor spaces for our health and wellbeing.
“The improvements to the public space at Wellington Place will mirror and support the shift that businesses are making towards flexible and collaborative working, as well as enhancing the community programme we currently have in place. Tower Square has been and will always be at the heart of the development, and improvements to that space will see regular for outdoor fitness classes, local markets stalls and street food vendors for everyone to enjoy.
“We look forward to welcoming back our business community when it is safe for them to do so, and we hope the new public realm works will make Wellington Place feel even more like home.”
Tom Riordan, Leeds City Council’s chief executive, added: “It’s great to hear about this investment, which is another forward-thinking piece in the development jigsaw that’s taken shape at Wellington Place in recent years.
“We want to have the best possible uses made of public space across the city and these plans, with their focus on improving both the environment and people’s wellbeing, are a fine example of what can be achieved.
“They also underline how innovative ideas and community spirit will help drive Leeds’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that leaves no one behind.
“It will be really exciting to see the positive impact that the work has on Wellington Place and the wider regeneration of the West End of the city.”
