JPG Group has been appointed by Harworth Group to provide civil and strategic land consultancy services for the next two major development stages at Gateway 36 in Barnsley.
Gateway 36 is a significant 127-acre mixed-use development located adjacent to Junction 36 of the M1, on the site of the former Rockingham Colliery. Harworth has already delivered phase one on the strategic site with the delivery of more than 145,000 sq ft of industrial space and a drive through unit, creating 250 jobs.
In October 2020 JPG assisted Harworth in secured planning consent for phases two and three which comprise 1.1 million sq ft of additional space for business, industrial, storage and distribution purposes. Consent has also been granted for a new link road from the existing Shortwood Roundabout, running south to serve phase two, alongside a new roundabout on the Dearne Valley Parkway with an arm to the north to serve phase three.
All three phases of Gateway 36, alongside nearby employment and residential land have been unlocked as part of a £17.1m funding package from the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund (SCRIF). It is estimated that this development will support the creation of 2,500 jobs when completed.
JPG has provided advice through the necessary consents for structural, earthworks, draining and access. They have utilised the very latest BIM compatible software to design the subsurface, highways and earthworks in 3D; allowing for the design to deliver the most sustainable approach with an overall net-zero import or export.
The contract also includes professional advice on the installation of an earth reinforced slope and temporary surface water management infrastructure. JPG is working alongside the scheme’s main contractor Howard Civil Engineering.
Due to the scale of the project, its mining legacy and its challenging topography JPG is serving the project from its teams in Strategic Land, Infrastructure and Geo-Environmental Engineering.
