Welborne Garden Village – the proposed new community to the north of Fareham, Hampshire – has moved forward with this week’s positive decision by Fareham Borough Council (FBC).
Welborne’s future, providing 6,000 new homes and supporting 5,700 jobs in the region, now depends upon a final piece of public sector funding for motorway junction improvement works essential to the scheme.
Under the proposals agreed by FBC’s Planning Committee, Welborne’s master developer Buckland Development Ltd (Buckland) has doubled its own contribution towards the cost of the M27 Junction 10 works to fill the funding gap left by Solent LEP last year.
“Welborne will be hugely significant in boosting growth and recovery of the local economy. We envisage Welborne as being a fantastic place to live and work and are delighted by today’s decision by Fareham’s Planning Committee, which brings us closer to being able to make our vision a reality,” commented Mark Thistlethwayte, Chairman of Buckland. “Our contribution clears the way for Welborne to proceed; the next milestone is for the public sector – at local, regional and national level – to focus all efforts on confirming the remaining £30m Government funding to enable Welborne to progress.”
The next key milestones for Welborne include:
- FBC securing additional £30m Housing Infrastructure Fund loan for M27 Junction 10 upgrade
- Buckland, FBC and Hampshire County Council signing the (S016) legal agreement for Welborne infrastructure.
