Cubo, a brand new concept in co-working space, has opened its doors in Derby city centre – and welcomed its first cohort of tenants.
Developer Staton Young has spent more than £750,000 on the transformation of the grade II listed Old Post Office building in Victoria Street – which has resulted in stunning contemporary serviced office space in the city centre.
Staton Young chose Derby as the first UK location for Cubo – because of the city’s growing need for grade A office space, and its dynamic and creative workforce.
Rebecca Brough, managing director at Staton Young, said: “For a while now we have been planning our new Cubo brand and we are delighted to bring this new concept to Derby. We are pleased to be once again investing in Derby, bringing something the region hasn’t seen before.
“We have vast experience in serviced office space and are excited to be taking it to the next level. We have plans for further expansion to take Cubo across the Midlands and beyond.
“An experience-led lifestyle offer will entice millennials and Generation Z alike to Cubo and help attract and retain young entrepreneurs and graduate talent in Derby.”
Staton Young has kept the original features of the historic Post Office building and has transformed the space into 20,000 sq ft of luxury, modern office space with reception, co-working, hot desking, meeting rooms and communal areas.
Office space starts from £250 per desk per month and amenities include secure superfast broadband, state-of-the-art printer/scanners, office supplies, front reception service and private phone booths.
Designed by Leonard Design Architects, the high-tech space features 180 desks and has been created to address the needs of the modern worker whilst still offering the traditional office requirements.
Tenants can enjoy free speciality tea and coffee, community managers, daily cleaners, fruit water stations, building access 24/7, work and social events, mail and package handling, networking events and bicycle storage.
Rebecca said: “We wanted to create a working environment where people really want to come to work. Cubo is a modern, multi-use centre enabling people to produce their best work.
“Addressing the needs of the modern worker, Cubo co-working offers a workplace that takes the traditional requirements of functionality as a given, but adds a new focus to the needs, wants and lifestyles of its members.”
Ellie Salter, one of Cubo’s first tenants, said: “We have just set up our own start-up mortgage advisor company, and as a new business Cubo is the perfect place for us. We particularly like the networking opportunities and the communal spaces that Cubo has to offer and we are really looking forward to meeting and mixing with other local businesses.
“The design aspect of Cubo is fantastic and we wanted somewhere that looked professional and smart. There is also plenty of office space to choose from, for example the hot desks, private office space and different sized room options mean that we can still stay in the same building even when the company begins to grow.
“With our type of business, we are often out and about meeting clients so we don’t always do the typical working hours. It is a huge benefit having 24/7 building access, allowing us to work late hours or even weekends when needed. Everything is included, especially coffee and internet access, which is another added benefit and will help save us money in the long run.”
John Forkin, managing director at Marketing Derby said: “Cubo is a brilliant response to our fast-evolving and diversifying city economy. It’s a stunning space that will provide attractive, innovative and flexible home for emerging and established companies. Moreover, in converting the massive Post Office building it is pioneering the regeneration in Becketwell and beyond.”
Rebecca added: “Cubo Derby has an impressive large and modern co-working space offering a fantastic environment to encourage people to work to the best of their ability. It is also a great place to impress clients.”
From a freelancer working alone, through to larger organisations, Cubo has a range of options – hot desk, designated desk, private office, and Cubo studios.
“We want to offer our tenants a place which supports ideas and creativity,” added Rebecca.
“We have found that people are seeking new ways of working, new ways to connect and enjoy working. That’s why we came up with Cubo – in order to attract and retain the best staff by providing them with a comfortable and fun working environment.”
Derby is the region’s administrative and commercial centre and one of the strongest retailing locations in the East Midlands. It is also the headquarters of major corporate firms including Rolls Royce, Toyota, Bombardier Transport UK and Motorpoint.
