Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire say new proposals on employment law will lead to the creation of new jobs.
Business Secretary Vince Cable has outlined plans to change the law around dismissals and tribunals and they have been broadly welcomed by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Amrik Bhabra, president of the Chamber and managing director of Adecs, said: “This should be seen as a positive because it will give more businesses the confidence to take on new staff.
“It doesn’t give businesses – as some have suggested – the licence to ride roughshod over workers’ rights, it just begins the process of restoring parity when it comes to dismissals and tribunals.
“The vast majority of companies want to do the right thing, employ people, turn a profit and contribute to society.
“These changes will mean more, not less, of that happening. I have spoken to so many businesses over the years frightened to employ people because they fear the system if it goes wrong.
“That means the company is missing out on the chance to grow and people are missing out on employment.
“Of course, companies that do wrong when it comes to dismissals should be taken to task and that is what the law should be there to deter.
“It should not be there to deter the creation of new jobs so we broadly welcome these proposals.”
