Anglo Holt goes for gold with Woolwich Travelodge

Anglo Holt Construction is continuing its winning streak with Travelodge after completing a major hotel project in Woolwich, just in time to welcome visitors to the London games.

The West Bromwich-based company was awarded the £5.6 million contract by Powis Street Estates No.3 Limited to develop a 120-bedroom hotel in Powis Street, Woolwich.

The project involved the Grade II listed building – a former council building and headquarters for The Co-operative – being transformed into a hotel while retaining the property’s original features. Anglo Holt worked meticulously to ensure that the existing front elevation of the building – which dates back to 1903 – was retained, restoration work was carried out on the clock tower, and the feature domed roof was replaced.

The 40-week project – which has a BREEAM Very Good status – started in October 2011 and was completed this month (July).

Andy Elwell, managing director at Anglo Holt, said: “This was a prestigious project which, with its Grade II listed status, presented challenges but we were able to complete the refurbishment on time and on budget. Hotel rooms in the capital are at a premium with the London games about to begin so the recent completion of the Travelodge Woolwich project is perfect timing for visitors still seeking quality accommodation.”

The refurbishment deal extends the company’s successful 12-year partnership with Travelodge, which has seen it complete 54 hotels, with a further eight contracts currently in progress, worth a total of more than £200.5 million.

Tony O’Brien, UK development director for Travelodge Hotels, said: “We are very pleased that Woolwich was completed on time, and within budget, ahead of the London games as the hotel is likely to be fully booked with people travelling to the capital this summer.”

Based in West Bromwich in the West Midlands, Anglo Holt has an annual turnover in excess of £50 million and employs around 100 people. Its objective is to guarantee to deliver quality, reliability and added value throughout the total process of design, construction, project management and cost management.
