TJ set sites on commercial recycling expansion

A waste management specialist in the South has rolled out two commercial recycling facilities in Hampshire.

The first site for the TJ Group, which runs a branded fleet of nearly 100 vehicles, is at the Blashford sand and gravel quarry, just north of Ringwood in the Avon Valley.

With a new staff of three, the facility focuses on the recycling of soils and hardcore, such as concrete, bricks and asphalt, with new plant machinery for separation processing.

John Gosling is the managing director of TJ, which has 3,000 clients across from Bournemouth in the west to Brighton in the east and up to near Rugby in the East Midlands.

He said: “Our newly-leased recycling facility at Blashford Quarry means we can spread our geographical wings further into Dorset in the west and Wiltshire in the north, opening up new commercial opportunities as we continue to expand.”

John added: “There is increasing demand for recycled aggregate from companies looking to reduce their carbon footprints, and that of their own clients, with Blashford Quarry ideally placed to service local demand.”

The second newly-leased site, operated by 15 people, is at Tipner, Portsmouth, just off the M275. Operations at the materials recycling facility are geared to commercial use, such as trade.

It is here that skip waste from across the city region, such as rubble, wood and metal, is separated, as well as recycling collected in rounds by TJ from offices, factories, shops, garages, schools, local authorities and residential and nursing homes.

John said: “Our new site at Tipner is the amalgamation of other ones we ran in Portsmouth and Havant, allowing for economies of scale and strategically positioned by the M275 for ease of access.”

The acquisitions are the latest industry developments at TJ, which is headquartered in Fareham.

Earlier this year the independent firm, with 140 staff, invested in £165,000 in new machinery which screens top soil to British standards for commercial use.

The portable trommel screener, which diverts segregated soil away from being buried in costly landfill as unusable spoil, is located at TJ’s processing plant at Portfield, Chichester.

Customers for the environmentally-friendly product, which passes through three grading screens, include landscape gardeners, golf courses, schools, local authorities and property developers.

Last year TJ bought a £200,000 concrete crusher at the site to turn up to 750 tonnes of rubble a day into recycled aggregate.

All of TJ’s sites, including one at Yapton, West Sussex, are licensed by the Environment Agency.

TJ also launched a new recycled material to be used in the construction of motorways, A-roads and footpaths, with the Department of Transport approving the trademarked product Reclamix™.
