Laying the foundations for a bright new future

Foundations have been laid for the next family homes in the transformation of Somerstown.

Work is progressing well on 22 quality eco-friendly family homes and three retail units as part of the next stage of the transformation of Somerstown.

The ten 3-bedroom houses and twelve 2-bedroom flats in Wellington Street will include gardens and parking and are expected to be completed by October 2012.

Project manager Kevin Hudson said: “It was great to see the new residents moving into the first houses and it’s fantastic to be able to continue the exciting transformation of Somerstown by providing more housing options for local families to benefit from.

The homes have been supported with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), as part of an investment of around £2.5m to Portsmouth City Council which is enabling it to deliver new homes in Warwick Crescent, Wellington Street and Watts Road.

Kevin Bourner, head of area at the HCA, said: “We’re pleased to see work begin on this important part of the transformation of Somerstown. The residential and retail development will boost job opportunities and provide local people with a good mix of family homes and flats. The properties are being built to a high standard of quality and sustainability, which will also help local families save on their fuel bills.”
