Construction works have begun on a new 180 bed Premier Inn and Thyme Restaurant, designed by Lawrence McPherson Associates and constructed by Ogilvie Construction, for Whitbread PLC at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. The hotel scheduled to open for the Commonwealth games in 2014.
Located on the South side of the river Clyde, the new 6 storey hotel will sit next to the BBC Scotland building and directly opposite the SECC and the ‘Armadillo’. The larger Pacific Quay development sits on the site of the former Glasgow garden Festival which was held in 1988. Pacific Quay now is home to the Glasgow Science Centre, IMAX cinema, The Millennium Tower as well as being the new home for BBC Scotland and STV.
The hotel is of a contemporary design and has been designed to maintain the strong building edge to the river and to provide a transition between the two very different heights of the neighbouring buildings. The Thyme restaurant is faces the Clyde with an external dining area adjacent to the river creating a range of dining experiences for guests and to reinforce the active frontage of the building.
The design also provides for a new public space which links Bells Bridge to Pacific Quay, formalising a key pedestrian link from the SECC to the site and beyond.
In line with Whitbread PLC’s corporate responsibility programme, aimed at reducing carbon emissions by 26% by 2020, the Hotel has been designed to meet these targets, encompassing low carbon design and specification and incorporating many energy saving features.
This development is one of a number of projects in Scotland for Premier Inn, designed by Lawrence McPherson Associates – currently on site or at the design stages.
