Property Development company J.R.Smart chose MIB’s Infill Panel over traditional methods to build the outside walls of their 80,000sq.ft. speculative office development at Capital Quarter, a stone’s throw from the capital’s John Lewis store, St Davids 2 retail development and the Central railway station.
The concrete* superstructure makes an ideal partner for the 136mm structural insulated panel and the work was carried out in a fraction of the time that traditional methods would have taken. The 0.20 U value of the panel also saved on additional trades and materials to bring it up to applicable standards. Other savings were achieved by manufacturing off-site at MIB’s Blaina factory , thus minimising waste , site storage and traffic movements.
(*The panel is also ideal for HRS structures)
Operations Manager Dean Bennett oversaw the installation for MIB and said, “We were able to dovetail with the developer’s schedule perfectly due to the proximity of the factory and the control that gives us. The weather was particularly bad but this product can be installed when other methods are impractical ”.
Work has now started on the glazed curtain wall façade which is just one of the many finishes which can readily be fixed to the panel due to its innovative construction.
Gareth Smart of J.R.Smart commented, “Being a speculative development it was important that we used a system which could be put up quickly so that prospective tenants can envisage the office block. The MIB system enabled us to achieve our targets”.
