A hidden architectural gem in the historic heart of Tiverton has been sold by surveyors Stratton Creber Commercial.
The Oak Room, at 2C St Peter Street, has traded for a number of years as a social, arts and conferencing venue. Behind an austere grey stone frontage, it opens up to reveal a bright auditorium which retains a wealth of original features, including an organ which has been kept in fully working order. An oval gallery with steeply-tiered seating looks down on the main church auditorium which retains pews, an altar and commemorative plaques on the walls. A lower floor provides conference facilities and looks out over a rear patio with elevated views down to the River Exe.
The property came to the market just prior to March’s lockdown, but a buyer was found and, despite delays resulting from Covid, the sale has now completed. The buyer plans to keep the Oak Room open as a venue but with a change of direction. The vendor assured the agents that the property was haunted, so we hope that the spectral residents warm to the new owner’s plans.
The property was sold off an asking price of £250,000.
